First published in Great Britain in 1974 by Compton Russell Ltd.
The publication of Freya Stark’s selected letters begins a fresh account of her times and accomplishments. Though obviously complementary to her earlier books, it is intended that the letters should stand on their own as a separate and continuous commentary. The first years record the collision of war with youthful experience, the strain of continually threatened family happiness, illness and the gradual breakthrough to the Muslim world which was to be for her the inspiration of the whole of her later life. The first visit is to Syria, then after Baghdad, the book closes with her first impressions of Persia and this is just Volume 1.
